The Adventures of a Therapy Dogs
Pawmum, with her heart set on contributing to a bigger community, decided we should join this noble cause. After a successful temperament test, we dove headfirst into volunteering.
TDS carries out visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and learning institutions. So far, since June, our visits have taken us to some of them and every interaction is a tail-wagging experience. During these visits, I make sure to keep my cool, not letting wheelchairs, canes, or unique movements faze me. Getting along with everyone, from the little children to the wise elders, is my specialty.
Each visit is a treat and it is a heartwarming reminder that us doggos bring not just temporary smiles and laughter. We have a knack for permanently touching the lives of others, sprinkling happiness wherever our paws take us.
Now, for those wondering, there are different types of therapy dogs. I have been assessed to have a suitable temperament and be comfortable in different environments. Although I am not a service dog (or other specific purpose dogs), I can still get to interact with different people and dogs in various settings.
The Impact of Therapy Dogs
Their roots trace back to Florence Nightingale’s observation in the late 1800s. She noticed that furry friends helped reduce anxiety and aid in recovery. Nightingale wrote in her book Notes on Nursing (1860) that “a small pet is often an excellent companion for the sick.”
Fast forward to today, therapy dogs like me can help improve humans’ well-being and encourage deeper connections.
We’re not just cuddly creatures; we bring affection and comfort through activities or just our presence. In essence, we’re four-legged therapists spreading joy and healing one paw at a time.
